Hemoglobin A1c Blood Test

Did you know that diabetes can place you at risk for heart disease, kidney disease, and blindness? That’s why it’s important to work with your provider to outline a treatment plan based on your needs. An HbA1c test helps you to know your blood sugar levels. When your blood sugar is controlled, you feel better – you can have more energy, fewer sick days, and avoid complications.

What is an HbA1c test?

The HbA1c test, also known as the hemoglobin A1c or glycated hemoglobin test, is a blood test for people with diabetes that gives a good indication of how well your diabetes is being controlled. The test results reflect a person’s blood glucose levels over the previous 8-12 weeks. This information helps you and your provider determine if changes are needed in your treatment plan or lifestyle.

How often should I have an HbA1c test?

The American Diabetes Association recommends you have this test every 3 to 6 months depending on your level of control. If your therapy has changed or you are not meeting your glycemic goals, you may need testing every 3 months.

Where can I go to have the HbA1c test?

Your PCP or a specialist will order the test. Labs may require a lab form or written note for the test.
